ST. GEORGE — Western Oregon scored 42 unanswered points en route to a 42-24 victory over Dixie State on Friday. Quarterback David Sowards finished with 199 passing yards and two touchdowns in his first collegiate start.
Senior running back Joe Harris had a career-high three rushing touchdowns while sophomore receiver Paul Revis had 102 receiving yards and a touchdown. Revis also returned a punt for a touchdown. The Wolves’ defense recorded three interceptions.
Western Oregon (2-3 overall, 1-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) hosts North Alabama Saturday at 1 p.m. in a nonleague matchup.
PUNDYKE LEADS SOCCER TO VICTORY: Makana Pundyke scored two goals in the second half as Western Oregon’s women’s soccer team rallied to defeat Central Washington 2-1 on Saturday. The Wildcats led 1-0 at halftime before Pundyke’s goals in the 57th and 64th minutes gave the Wolves the lead. WOU improved to 5-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in GNAC play. Western Oregon hosted Concordia Tuesday after press time and hosts Seattle Pacific Saturday at 11 a.m.
VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO 4-11: The Western Oregon volleyball squad dropped a pair of GNAC matches last week. WOU lost to Central Washington 25-18, 25-12, 25-20 on Thursday and Northwest Nazarene 25-15, 25-20, 25-17 on Saturday. Alisha Bettinson had 10 kills and 15 digs to lead the Wolves against the Crusaders (4-11 overall, 1-5 GNAC). Bettinson had nine kills against the Wildcats on Thursday. The Wolves travel to play at Simon Fraser on Thursday and at Western Washington on Saturday.
CRAWFORD LEADS CROSS-COUNTRY: Seven Western Oregon cross-country runners competed at the Bowles Invitational on Saturday morning. Rachel Crawford placed 62nd overall (19 minutes, 17.8 seconds) in the 5,000-meter race to lead the women’s squad, which placed 16th in the team standings. Matthew Haglund was the lone male competing for WOU in the 8,000-meter race. He finished in 115th (28:17). Western Oregon will compete at the Western Washington Invitational Saturday at 10 a.m.
