CENTRAL ROUNDUP: Boys soccer looks for playoff berth

INDEPENDENCE — Central’s boys soccer team defeated Lebanon 4-0 on Oct. 20 before falling to Crescent Valley 1-0 on Thursday. The Panthers played Woodburn Tuesday after press time.

Central entered the match in a tie with the Bulldogs for fourth place with a 3-3 mark in Mid-Willamette Conference play. The top six teams advance to postseason play. The third and fourth seeds will host a play-in match, while the fifth- and sixth-place teams will travel on the road against a Midwestern League opponent. Play-in matches are scheduled for Saturday. The winner advances to the state playoffs, which begin Tuesday.

VOLLEYBALL WINS REGULAR SEASON FINALE: UPDATE: Central will play No. 1 Marist Catholic on Saturday. Central’s volleyball squad defeated Woodburn 22-25, 25-14, 25-18, 25-14 on Thursday to close out the regular season. With the victory, the Panthers finished in fifth in the MWC. Central opened the week with a 25-15, 25-21, 27-25 loss to Corvallis on Oct. 20. The Panthers played at Crater Tuesday after press time in the play-in round. Crater finished 11-9 overall and 6-6 in Midwestern League play during the regular season. The winner advances to the state tournament, which begins on Saturday. BOYS XC TAKES SIXTH: Central’s boys cross-country placed sixth at the MWC Championships on Oct. 21. Junior Zachary Meyer led the Panthers, placing 15th overall in 17 minutes, 21.92 seconds. Ammon Jeffries (21st, 17:27.06), Darien Hume (29th, 17:38.99), Aaron Padilla (31st, 17:47.82) and Josh Peterson (32nd, 17:48.07) rounded out Central’s scorers.

GIRLS SOCCER DROPS TWO: Central’s girls soccer team lost a pair of matches, falling to Lebanon 5-0 on Oct. 20 before losing to Crescent Valley 8-0 on Thursday. The Panthers (0-11 overall, 0-6 MWC) hosted Woodburn Tuesday after press time in the team’s final match.
