County VSO program progresses

DALLAS — The Polk County Board of Commissioners approved an application with the state on Aug. 2 for half-year funding for the new Veterans’ Service Officer program that will begin in January.

The state is slated to send the county $31,000 to help pay for the program. Polk County included $40,000 in its 2016-17 budget to launch the service. Previously, veterans seeking services had to go Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs in Salem.

County Administrator Greg Hansen said the county has found a possible location for an office, the former Claire’s Mercantile on Washington Street in Dallas.

“It would require some minor renovations,” Hansen said. “It gives them their own site. It has a lot of positives to it.”
