WESTERN OREGON ROUNDUP: Men's basketball rolls to wins

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Western Oregon’s men’s basketball team couldn’t be slowed during a 90-67 win over Simon Fraser on Thursday and a 78-58 victory over Western Washington on Saturday.

Senior Andy Avgi scored a game-high 20 points against Simon Fraser, while Alex Roth added 18 points and six rebounds. The Wolves defeated the Clan for the 14th-straight time dating back to 1999.

WOU led for all but one minute and 48 seconds against Western Washington.

The Wolves led by only one at the half before outscoring the Vikings by 19 in the second half.

Avgi scored 19 points and Roth added 18 points again. Julian Nichols scored 15 points.

WOU improved to 14-2 overall and 7-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

Western Oregon will host Alaska Anchorage on Thursday and Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday at 7 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DEFEATS CONCORDIA: Western Oregon’s women’s basketball team defeated Concordia 53-43 on Jan. 12 before falling to Montana State Billings 60-37 on Saturday. Jordan Mottershaw scored a game-high 14 points against Concordia. Emily Howey added 13 points, three rebounds and one blocked shot.

Sydney Azorr scored seven points against Montana State Billings.

WOU fell to 3-13 overall and 2-6 in conference play after the loss. The Wolves host Central Washington on Thursday and Northwest Nazarene on Saturday at 5:15 p.m.

TRACK AND FIELD OPENS INDOOR SEASON: Western Oregon’s track and field team competed at the University of Washington Indoor Preview meet on Saturday.

Badane Sultessa also set a new school mark in the 600-meter run, finishing in 1:19.95, taking eighth overall.

Emmi Collier led the women, placing ninth in the weighted throw with a mark of 53 feet, 6.5 inches.

WOU will compete at the Washington Invitational on Jan. 29.
