SALEM — After losing its opening game of the Casco League tournament on Friday, Perrydale’s girls basketball team’s season stood on the brink.
A 47-24 loss to Willamette Valley Christian meant the Pirates faced Jewell on Saturday. The winner would go onto state. The loser went home.
Perrydale rose to the occasion, defeating Jewell 39-21.
“We knew what Jewell was going to try to do,” coach Terry Newton said. “We put two shooters in the corners and when they were open, they knocked (their shots) down. On defense, our pressure got to them. Our girls did everything we asked. You can’t ask for much more.”
Freshman Sydney Lawrence was named to the all-tournament team and earned first-team all-league honors. Senior Sierra Starr and freshman Amity Deters were named second-team all-league.
Perrydale now turns its attention to state.
The Pirates will play at Country Christian Wednesday (today) at 6 p.m. in the first round of the 1A state playoffs.
“We have a tough game in front of us, no doubt about that,” Newton said.
Country Christian finished 18-7 overall and 9-1 in The Valley 10 League play.
The winner advances to the second round on Saturday.
“It’s a good chance to go over there and play in a big game,” Newton said.
