WOU ROUNDUP: Men’s basketball earns home victories

MONMOUTH — Western Oregon’s men’s basketball team defeated Alaska Fairbanks 68-61 on Thursday and Alaska Anchorage 89-71 on Saturday.

Tanner Omlid led the Wolves against Alaska Fairbanks with 13 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Malik Leaks scored a game-high 17 points, and J.J. Chirnside scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds.

Ali Faruq-Bey led WOU against Alaska Anchorage with 22 points. Omlid had 19 points, six assists, four rebounds and two blocks. Demetrius Trammell added 11 points, and Chirnside recorded 10 points, five rebounds and four blocks.

Western Oregon played Concordia Tuesday after press time. WOU closes out the regular season by hosting Montana State Billings Saturday at 7 p.m. Western Oregon (15-11 overall, 12-6 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) entered the week in third place in the conference standings. The Wolves have clinched a spot in the GNAC tournament March 2-4 in Lacey, Wash.

RIBICH, DEMPSEY WIN CONFERENCE TITLES: David Ribich and Josh Dempsey helped lead Western Oregon’s men’s track and field team to a second-place finish at the GNAC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday.

Ribich won the men’s 1,600- and 3,000-meter runs. Ribich finished the mile in 4 minutes, 10.01 seconds with teammate Dustin Nading taking second in 4:10.93.

Ribich won the 3,000 in 8:29.77.

Depmsey won the men’s 800 in 1:52.47.

The women’s team finished ninth in the team standings.

Suzanne Van De Grit took fifth in the women’s 800 with a time of 2:10.88.

Western Oregon will compete at the Seattle Pacific University Final Qualifier on Saturday.

SOFTBALL SWEEPS CHAMINADE, BYU-HAWAII: Western Oregon’s softball team swept Chaminade 11-2 and 12-4 on Feb. 15 before defeating Brigham Young University-Hawaii 9-3 and 11-0 on Friday.

Destiny Kuehl went five-for-six with two home runs and four runs batted in against Chaminade. Emma Alfonso also hit a pair of home runs.

Pitcher Sammi Cadwallader threw a two-hit shutout in the second game against BYU-Hawaii as the Wolves combined for 23 hits during the doubleheader.

Western Oregon plays a pair of doubleheaders against the College of Idaho on Saturday and Sunday.

BASEBALL FACES UC SAN DIEGO: Western Oregon’s baseball team played the University of California, San Diego in a pair of doubleheaders. The Wolves dropped the first two games on Thursday, falling 5-0 and 9-3. The final games of the series were postponed due to weather. No makeup date has been announced.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS ON SENIOR NIGHT: Western Oregon’s women’s basketball team lost to Central Washington 66-55 on senior night on Saturday. The Wolves also lost to Northwest Nazarene 77-59 on Thursday. Savanna Heugly scored a team-high 18 points against Central Washington. Sydney Azorr added 16 points and four rebounds.

Jasmine Miller scored a team-high 11 points against Northwest Nazarene.

Western Oregon closes out the season on the road at Saint Martin’s Thursday at 7 p.m. and at Seattle Pacific Saturday at 2 p.m.
