WOU ROUNDUP: Football wins on Senior Day

MONMOUTH — Western Oregon University’s football team defeated Simon Fraser 24-21 on Senior Day on Saturday.

The Wolves scored the first touchdown of the day in the first quarter thanks to a 5-yard touchdown pass from Nick Duckworth to Blaise Manabe.

The Wolves added a field goal and a touchdown in the second quarter after Duckworth hit Keoni Piceno to take a 17-7 advantage into the half.

The Clan scored twice in the third quarter to grab a 21-17 lead headed into the final quarter. The Wolves responded with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Duckworth to Piceno to regain the lead.

Simon Fraser missed a field goal as a time expired and the Wolves earned the victory.

WOU finishes the 2017 season with a 3-8 record overall and a 2-6 mark in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

MEN’S BASKETBALL WINS TWO: Western Oregon University’s men's basketball team opened the regular season with a pair of victories last weekend. The Wolves defeated Point Loma 70-69 on Friday and Fresno Pacific 123-67 on Saturday. The Wolves built a 20-point lead with nine minutes left in the game against Point Loma, but the Sea Lions rattled off a furious rally, with a potential game-winner rattling off the rim as time expired. Darius Luborn led the Wolves with 19 points.

WOU's win over Fresno Pacific was considerably easier. Demetrius Trammell scored a game-high 26 points. Dustin Triano added 17 points. Tanner Omlid recorded 10 points, four assists and two steals. Western Oregon hosts the D2 Shootout Friday and Saturday. WOU plays Azusa Pacific Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Dixie State Saturday at 3 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL DROPS TWO: Western Oregon University’s volleyball team lost to Alaska Anchorage 25-23, 25-21, 25-22 on Thursday and Alaska Fairbanks 25-18, 25-17, 25-10 on Saturday.

The Wolves (6-19 overall, 2-16 GNAC) hosts Seattle Pacific Thursday at 7 p.m. and Saint Martin's Saturday at 7 p.m. in the team's final matches of the season.
