Salem Concert Band plays classic
The Salem Concert Band will perform A Night at the Opera Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Elsinore Theatre, 170 High Street SE, Salem.
Rebecca Fromherz, of Dallas, will sing during the concert.
All seats are reserved. Mezzanine level seats cost $30. Main floor and balcony seats are $20 for adults and $10 for students (K-12).
Yard debris drop off Saturday
A fall yard debris drop off will take place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Riverview Park in Independence.
Grass, leaves, weeds, twigs, brush, pumpkins and limbs are acceptable.
Ashes, dirt, sod, rock or gravel, stumps and logs, animal waste or litter and painted or finished wood are not acceptable.

Salem West Valley to host fundraiser
Salem West Valley, 525 SE Washington St., Dallas, will host a collective goods fundraiser Monday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The sale will take place in the hospital conference room, located immediately inside the front door.
Items available include books, small electronics, home goods and gifts for children.
Proceeds from the sale benefit the hospital volunteer services scholarship fund. The fund proves scholarships for Polk County high school students wishing to pursue college education in a health care related field.
IDA to host open house at Commons
The Independence Down town Association will host an open house at Indy Commons, 278 S. Main St., Independence, Thursday from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
There is no cost to attend.
The public is invited.
IDA will share what it does, who is involved and how others can get involved, as well as discuss what is and isn’t working in downtown Independence.
Light snacks and refreshments will be served.
Dallas Seventh Day presents series
Dallas Seventh Day Adventist Church, 589 SW Birch St., Dallas, will host a documentary-style series to highlight the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther.
The church will show “A Pale Horse Rides” and will explore what the Bible has to say about Christianity’s future.
The series is hosted by Shawn Boonstra.
The series begins Friday at 7 p.m. and will continue Saturday and Sunday at 7 p.m.

Author Vlautin at Dallas Library
Dallas Public Library, 950 Main St., Dallas, will host author Willy Vlautin Thursday at 7 p.m.
Vlautin, of Scappoose, is an award-winning author of four novels, including “The Free” and “Lean on Pete.” His fifth novel, “Don’t Skip Out on Me,” is due out in February 2018. A movie based on “Lean on Pete” will be released next February.

Murder Mystery set for Saturday
The Downtown Dallas Murder Mystery will take place Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
The public is invited to solve the mystery. Cost is $10. Participants will receive a murder mystery map that will lead you to clues and suspects located in downtown Dallas.
Maps will be available at Pressed Coffee and Wine Bar, 788 Main St., Dallas, beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
The solution to the murder mystery will be revealed at 5 p.m. at Pressed.
Tickets are available prior to the event at Just Stuff, Main Street Emporium, D Tats and Oddities, Court Street Hair, Some Things, Four Seasons, Domino’s Pizza, Courtyard Coffee and Pressed.
Pressed will also offer tickets on Saturday.
The public can meet some of the suspects in a family event Friday at 7 p.m. at Pressed.
