Dragons go 2-1 at tourney

SALEM — Dallas’ volleyball team opened its season at the McKay Tournament in Salem on Saturday.

The Dragons defeated McKay 25-15, 25-18 and Blanchett, 25-23, 19-25, 15-11 before falling to Radford (from Hawaii), 23-25, 25-23, 15-11 in the championship match.

“This was our first true test to see how the girls were going to mesh as a team,” coach Shana Lavier said. “They played a lot of volleyball, and even though they were exhausted by the time the championship game came around, they showed tremendous tenacity.”

Stats were not available, but Lavier said several players stepped up in a big way.

“Emma (Classen) and Maggie (Blair) played all the way around all day and were just solid and consistent,” Lavier said. “Tristin (Savage) had a great tournament, not only hitting, but was able to frustrate a lot of teams with her blocking. She shut down hitters real quick. Hailey (Van Well), even though she is only a sophomore, she was an offensive threat.”

Lavier said Saturday’s tournament showed that the Dragons are ready to compete for a league title this fall.

“I believe our biggest strength is the positive energy we bring to the court,” Lavier said. “The girls have been working hard on communicating and getting along.”

Dallas played Lebanon Tuesday after press time in the team’s first conference match of the season.

The Dragons host Crescent Valley Thursday at 6 p.m. and Corvallis Tuesday at 6 p.m.

“This is one of the toughest leagues in the state,” Lavier said. “We have seven seniors and they are all critical components of our success this year. The key to finding success will have to be our work ethic and defense.”
