IPD arrest five impaired drivers in July

INDEPENDENCE — In July, the Independence Police Department made five DUII arrests, said Chief Robert Mason in a news release.

One of the arrests involved the intoxicated driver hitting a parked car that was occupied. No serious injuries resulted. The other four driving-under-the-influcene-of-intoxicants arrests resulted from patrolling officers seeing driving infractions occur and finding the motorists impaired after initiating traffic stops.

Driving while impaired is deadly, Mason said in the release. About one-third of all traffic crash fatalities in the United States involve drunk drivers. Impaired driving is 100 percent preventable. Plan transportation home in advance of partaking and take care of those around you by making sure your friends are using designated drivers.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provides grant funding for officers to put in overtime shifts to support the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.

The Independence Police Department will dedicate an extra officer to finding impaired motorists periodically during the Labor Day weekend.
