CORVALLIS — Central’s boys basketball team went 2-0 at the Crescent Valley Invitational, defeating Ashland 50-42 on Friday and Hermiston 54-48 on Saturday.
Kaleb Kantola scored 13 points against Ashland, while Brendan Lesmeister added 12 points.
Lesmeister and Peter Mendazona each scored 15 points against Hermiston.
“I think the guys were bummed about their performance against Cascade (on Dec. 18) and needed a bit of redemption,” coach Tim Kreta said.
The Panthers finished nonleague play with an 8-2 mark. Central opens Mid-Willamette Conference play on Tuesday by hosting Lebanon at 7 p.m.
“It’s going to be interesting. I have no idea how the cards are going to fall,” Kreta said. “There’s no team you can look past this year. It’s an awesome time to be a part of this league.”
GIRLS BASKETBALL DEFEATS CHURCHILL: Central’s girls basketball team defeated Churchill 47-40 on Friday. The Panthers (7-1 overall) closes out nonleauge play by hosting West Albany Wednesday (today) at 7 p.m. The Panthers open MWC play at Lebanon Tuesday at 7 p.m.
WRESTLING GOES 6-3 AT NORTHWEST DUALS: Central’s wrestling team went 6-3 at the Northwest Duals on Thursday and Friday.
Central defeated Cleveland (57-21), Milwaukie (42-30) and Sweet Home (42-31) and lost to Sprague (53-16) and Redmond (51-27) on Thursday. The Panthers defeated Sherwood 50-26, Glencoe (48-28) and McKay (54-27) and lost to Newberg (45-31) on Friday.
Central will compete at Crescent Valley Thursday at 4 p.m. and at the Aloha Dual Challenge Friday at 4 p.m.
