Thursday is the opening of the Polk County Fair. All summer long we’ve anticipated three special days when everything good about our communities is showcased for everyone to see and enjoy.

MONMOUTH — Tofer Deforest was putting the finishing touches on his monstrous creation. Deforest had spent hours crafting a spider — a tarantula, to be exact — out of clay.
