Covering Dallas, Monmouth, Independence, Falls City and surrounding areas since 1868

Karen Porter had a good time at a mountain trail clinic at the Oregon Horse Center in Eugene last week. She is working to perfect her skills at navigating an obstacle course on her horse, Cody, in preparation for a competition in November. Good luck to her. We'll follow up on how it worked out later.

Gene and Carolyn Hall's daughter, Carolyn Jean, is visiting from Dallas, Texas, for 10 days. On the weekend of Oct. 13-14 they had a family gathering, then on Thursday Carolyn's granddaughter, Jackie, and her children Jordan, 3, and Riley, 4 months, came from Salem to visit Carolyn Jean for the day, as well as granddaughter Ashton and her son Logan, 18 months.

Sam and Judy Guida spent a week at the Mayan Palace Resort on the Sea of Cortez about 15 miles from Puerto Penasco, Mexico, last week. They just went to relax and enjoy the beautiful beach. On one of the days, Judy took a catamaran out to Bird Island to see seals, sea lions, cormorants and pelicans, getting beautiful photos of them all.

My daughter, Lorraine Odell from Salem, and I took a two-day tour of quilt shops on the coast and in Portland as part of a "shop hop," which is an organized tour of quilt stores in Oregon.
When we visited a shop, we got our "passport" stamped, received a free quilt block kit and were eligible to win prizes if we visit each shop in an area. Lorraine's goal was to go to all 43 participating shops to have her name in a special drawing for a $250 gas card.
Diane Telfer and her mother-in-law are also touring as I write this.
It may seem crazy to nonquilters, but it's a lot of fun to see all the shops. My big purchase was a treadle sewing machine ... you just never know when the electricity will be out, and I want to have the essentials.
