Covering Dallas, Monmouth, Independence, Falls City and surrounding areas since 1868
May 28, 2013
Rich and Tess Simons celebrated son Josh's graduation from Central High School with a party at their home in downtown Pedee on May 19.
Josh's grandmother, Wilma Simons, brother Brandon and sister Katrina helped host the party, with food provided by Diana Barnhart. Josh's many relatives came from near and far.
His grandparents (Tess' parents), Barb and Dallas Groshman, came from Bemidji, Minn., as well as Josh's aunt Missy Chatterton and cousin Matt. His uncle, Jess Lynn, was there from Molalla, uncle Mark Lynn from Keizer, uncle Dion Lynn from Wilsonville, and aunt Helen Lynn and her family from Albany.
Rich's sisters, Margie Holmes and Sandy Lewis and daughter Sarah Kluting with her family, all from Dallas, were also there for the celebration, as well as Josh's girlfriend, Nicola Larios, and her family from Monmouth.
Fortunately, the weather was beautiful so the party could be held in the Simons' perfectly landscaped backyard, most of it done by Wilma and her friend Bob Small, who was at the party.
Josh will attend Western Oregon University in Monmouth next year, as will Nicola.
Pete and LaVerne Bennett, along with Rick, Michelle and Nash Bennett, were part of a team that participated in the recent 24-hour American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Polk County.
This is the 11th year that the Bennett family has had a team participate in the Relay. LaVerne and her sister, Kathy Zehner of Monmouth, were in charge of the silent auction.
The entire event was successful and participants were grateful for the mostly dry weather.
LaVerne Bennett recently went to Salem to baby-sit granddaughter Avery so daughter-in-law Julie and granddaughter Hannah could attend a scholarship awards luncheon.
Hannah was excited to win one of the $1,000 music scholarships that the Whitnell family awards each year.
Hannah plans to attend the University of Oregon this fall and major in music.
