Covering Dallas, Monmouth, Independence, Falls City and surrounding areas since 1868

Pedee lost another resident on Thursday night, when Wes Burbank, 81, died after years of health problems that would have killed a lesser man many years ago.
Burbank was born in Falls City and lived in Pedee all of his life, except for the time he served in the Navy. He was known for his generosity, kindness and helpfulness by all his neighbors.
I personally admired his ability to get up and get going after each of his problems: heart attack, lung cancer, multiple hip and knee replacements, and various other problems. His wife, Carla, and sons Dan, Dave, Doug and Dennis, were all with him when he died and they will miss him.
His funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m., with burial afterward in Womer Cemetery.
The Polk Saddle-ites had their monthly meeting Sept. 10 at Larry and Mary Shellenbarger's home near Independence, and several from Pedee attended: Kevin and Karen Porter, Jerry Mentzer and Charm Waller, and Sam and Judy Guida.
This month they took their horses with them, where they could ride in the Shellenbargers' outdoor arena for an hour or so before the meeting.
It was fun to spend time seeing horses and riders working together. They then had a pizza party and meeting in the Shellenbargers' beautiful garden.
