Art exhibit open
at Cannon Gallery
Community members can view the art of seven of the best contemporary illustrators working today at Western Oregon University's Cannon Gallery until Feb. 8.
The exhibit, "Other Worlds: The Art of Illustration," features science fiction and fantasy genre art.
The work of Donato Giancola, whose clients include National Geographic, LucasArts, DC Comics and The United Nations, will be on display.
Also featured is Omar Rayyan, a conceptual artist and designer for the motion picture "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe." Rayyan's illustrations have been included in Simon & Schuster, Random House and Disney publications for children and young adults.
Derek Stenning, Stephen Martiniere, David Meng, Tran Nguyen and David Polumbo round out the exhibit artists.
The Cannon Gallery is located in WOU's Campbell Hall and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Rain garden class
is set for Saturday
Polk Soil & Water Conservation District and Polk County-OSU Extension Service are hosting a rain garden workshop titled "Landscaping for Clean Water and Healthy Streams" on Saturday.
The class runs from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Polk County-OSU Extension Service Office, 289 E. Ellendale Ave., Suite 301, Dallas.
Participants will learn how to develop their own rain garden from trainers Maria Cahill and Derek Godwin. Cost is $25, which covers materials and lunch.

UO Gospel Singers
to perform at CHS
A performance by the two-time national champion University of Oregon Gospel Singers is slated at the Central High School Fine Arts Auditorium on Saturday.
Proceeds from the concert, which begins at 5 p.m., will assist the group with its trip to China, where they will perform at two universities, one professional performance hall and the Great Wall of China. The choir includes Central High graduate Donovan Cassell.
The concert is coordinated by Independence First Baptist Church and New Life Ministries. Tickets are $5 each.

visit to West Salem
The Salem Chamber Orchestra will perform its Winter Soiree in West Salem on Sunday at 3 p.m.
The program will include music from Charles Gounod, Zwei Gesange, Douglas Hill and Johannes Brahms, featuring piano, viola, violins, cello, bass and horn instruments. A complementary wine-and-dessert reception will follow the performance.
The soiree takes place at the home of John and Gretchen Jensen, 1638 Onyx St. NW, with parking available in the neighborhood. Advance tickets are $22 for adults and $12 for students. Price increases by $3 at the door. Tickets are available in advance at salemchamberorchestra.org.
