Covering Dallas, Monmouth, Independence, Falls City and surrounding areas since 1868
June 12, 2007
POLK COUNTY -- Local residents will be served by two new CARTS (Chemeketa Area Regional Transportation System) express bus routes linking rural Polk County cities and Salem beginning July 2.
Route 40 will travel between Independence, Monmouth, Dallas and the Salem Transit Mall. The Dallas/Salem Express (Route 50) will travel between Dallas and the Salem Transit Mall.
For students, Route 40 will stop at Western Oregon University.
Salem students can also transfer to a Cherriots bus once at the transit mall.
CARTS already serves Dallas, Monmouth and Independence, but the new routes will reflect schedule changes and increased runs.
The changes are a result of recommendations from a five-year plan that included input from residents of the areas served by CARTS.
The new route schedules will be posted on the Cherriots web site, www.cherriots.org.
The fares remain the same - $1.50 for adults and $1 for youths 6 to 18, seniors 60 and over, and persons with disabilities.
The fares have remained stable for more than two years despite rising gasoline costs.
Day passes, monthly passes and ticket books are also available at reduced rates. For more information, contact Mona West in the CARTS office, 503-588-2424.
CARTS, a public transit system that serves Marion and Polk counties, connects 19 cities with one another and with Salem. It is possible to use the system to get from Polk County all the way to Mill City in east Marion County or north to Woodburn.
