POLK COUNTY -- A Salem man died Friday morning when a pickup struck the bicycle he was riding.
According to a Polk County Sheriff's Office press release, at about 10:50 a.m. a Dodge Ram pickup was traveling west on Hopewell Road near Spring Valley Lane northeast of West Salem when it hit a bicyclist riding in the same direction.
The bicyclist, David Apperson, 57, of Salem, was thrown from his bike and died of injuries sustained from the accident.
The driver of the pickup, John Taylor, 26, of Salem remained on the scene until emergency crews arrived and has cooperated with the investigation.
No criminal charges have been filed at this time, according to the release.
Hopewell Road was closed for about four hours while the crash was investigated.
