POLK COUNTY -- A Dallas man was killed Thursday morning in a single-car crash on Highway 22 following a storm that blanketed the Willamette Valley in ice and snow.
An Oregon State Police trooper on patrol spotted the tires of a vehicle upside down in water west of the Highway 223 intersection at about 7 a.m., according to an OSP news release.
Unaware if the vehicle was occupied, the trooper requested Dallas Fire & Rescue respond to help. Using a winch, firefighters overturned the 1983 Toyota pickup and found Cody Robert McDaniel, 22, inside. Safety restraint use is not confirmed, OSP said.
Investigators couldn't determine exactly how the crash happened, but it was learned that McDaniel had been expected in Grand Ronde at about 6 a.m.
Tire tracks were seen westbound near milepost 12 on what was then an icy road leading off the shoulder, where the truck was found upside down in nearly 5 feet of water.
OSP troopers reported 90 motor vehicle crashes between midnight and noon on Thursday. The central and southern Willamette Valley were the areas hardest hit, OSP said.
