Grand Ronde veterans powwow on tap

GRAND RONDE -- The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde 2012 Marcellus Norwest Memorial Veterans Powwow -- renamed in honor of U.S. Army veteran and Tribal Elder Marce Norwest, who died in 2011 -- will be held Friday through Sunday.

GRAND RONDE -- The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde 2012 Marcellus Norwest Memorial Veterans Powwow -- renamed in honor of U.S. Army veteran and Tribal Elder Marce Norwest, who died in 2011 -- will be held Friday through Sunday.

The annual event takes place at the Uyxat Powwow Grounds, 9390 Highway 22 (Hebo Road), near Fort Yamhill State Park in Grand Ronde.

Grand entries will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday.

Veterans powwow master of ceremonies will be Nick Sixkiller and Grand Ronde Tribal member Deitz Peters and his wife, Rose, will be the head man and woman.

The Peters' will host Owl Dance and Team Dance specials.

Veterans, dancers and members of the public are welcome to attend. There will be arts and crafts and food vendors. Free camping and parking will be available, but no drugs or alcohol are permitted, and pets are not allowed in the powwow arena.

The first 15 drums are guaranteed session pay.
