DALLAS -- A rural Polk County man will spend 60 months in prison for accidentally shooting his 8-year-old stepson.
Steven Hanna, 33, pleaded no contest in Polk County Circuit Court on July 25 to attempted assault in the second degree, and guilty to assault IV, being a felon in possession of a firearm and one count of tampering with a witness.
His crime occurred in the 21000 block of Gage Road, southwest of Pedee, on March 26. Salem Hospital emergency room staff contacted Polk County Sheriff's deputies that day after the boy was brought in with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.
Originally, Hanna and his wife, Michal, told authorities that the boy was shot by somebody while the child was playing in the woods. It was later revealed that Hanna shot him at the residence while horsing around with a .38 caliber revolver.
The couple then instructed family members to lie about what happened.
"It was blind luck (the victim) wasn't killed," said Jennifer Gaddis, Polk County chief deputy district attorney.
"The thing that struck me was that the boy's biological mother and the defendant were more concerned with getting the child to lie for Hanna than getting him to the hospital," Gaddis added.
Michal Hanna recently received three years probation for hindering prosecution in connection with the shooting.
