MONMOUTH -- Monmouth Police Department will conduct a pedestrian safety detail on Monday at the intersection of North Pacific Highway (99W) and Church Street.
The focus of the detail is raising awareness for drivers and pedestrians of pedestrian right-of-way laws. The check will be between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Under state law:
* All intersections, marked or unmarked, are legal crosswalks and drivers are required to stop when a pedestrian is in the crosswalk;
* Drivers must stop and stay stopped for pedestrians in crosswalks until they have cleared the driver's lane and the adjacent lane.
The safety detail is being funded with a grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation. During similar details in April and May, officers stopped a total of 64 cars. A fifth of those drivers were given verbal warnings.
