Motorcyclist dies on Highway 22

VALLEY JUNCTION -- A Salem man died in a fatal motorcycle crash Saturday morning on Highway 22 about five miles south of Highway 18 in Polk County.

VALLEY JUNCTION -- A Salem man died in a fatal motorcycle crash Saturday morning on Highway 22 about five miles south of Highway 18 in Polk County.

According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Senior Trooper Bridget Taylor, a 2002 Yamaha motorcycle operated by Wade W. Winkle, 56, was westbound on Highway 22 near milepost 5 entering a right-hand curve at about 11:45 a.m. when it traveled straight into a guardrail along the eastbound shoulder.

The motorcycle slid along the guardrail as Winkle was ejected and came to rest in the eastbound lane.

Winkle was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation into the crash is continuing.

Traffic was delayed after the crash. One lane was reopened about 30 minutes after the crash. All lanes were open about 3 p.m.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Polk County Sheriff's Office, West Valley Fire District and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
