School supply donations are needed

MONMOUTH -- Monmouth's Petals & Vines, 173 Main St. W., has joined forces with the Polk County Resource Center to be a collection point for donations to families who need assistance with school supplies.

Donations to the Polk County Resource Center for the purchase of school supplies also will be welcomed and are tax deductible.

"We want to help students start the school year with the supplies they need to succeed," said Maggie Triplett, owner of Petals & Vines. "Everyone who does drop off some of the needed supplies or makes a financial donation will be rewarded with a flower and they can enter to win a free bouquet."

The most needed items are: backpacks, calculators (scientific would be ideal), USB memory sticks, three-ring binders, compasses, protractors, large scissors, color pencils, college-ruled notebook paper, and spiral notebooks.

Donations and supplies need to be dropped off by Friday in order to have them ready for distribution.

Last year, the organization served 620 Polk County youths in Dallas, Falls City, Independence and Monmouth schools. This year, it is expected to serve 800 young people.

LaCreole painting party is Saturday

DALLAS -- LaCreole Middle School staff is looking for volunteers to help paint its gym on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m.

LaCreole Middle School Parent Teacher Club is sponsoring the event, made possible through a grant from Lowe's.

LaCreole is located at 701 SE LaCreole Drive, Dallas.

ACADEMIC HONORS

Dallas man receives college degree

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- William Esbenshade of Dallas received his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, Magna Cum Laude, from Carleton College during its 138th commencement exercises held June 9.
