November election just around corner

POLK COUNTY -- There's still time to file paperwork to run for local government offices in the November general election -- but deadlines are approaching fast.

POLK COUNTY -- There's still time to file paperwork to run for local government offices in the November general election -- but deadlines are approaching fast.

Paperwork is due in Dallas, Monmouth, Independence and Falls City next week.

Term for mayors in all four cities are two years and, for council members, four years.

* In Dallas, there are five city council positions up for election as well as the mayor's seat.

Candidate packets are available at City Hall, 187 SE Court St., and the deadline to file is Tuesday.

* Falls City has four council seats up for election, in addition to the mayor's seat.

Required forms and candidate petition signature sheets are available at City Hall, 299 Mill St., Falls City. Signatures on petitions must be verified by the Polk County Clerk before being turned in to the city.

Completed paperwork must be turned in at City Hall by Monday at 4 p.m.

* Independence has the mayor's post and three council seats open.

Prospective candidates in Independence must turn in 21 valid signatures from city voters to the city recorder's office by Tuesday.

* Monmouth also has the mayor's position and three council seats open. Candidates must turn in 27 valid signatures from city voters to the city recorder's office by Tuesday.

Candidates running for office in Dallas, Independence and Monmouth must be a registered Oregon voter and have been a legal resident of the city continuously during the 12 months immediately preceding the election. In Falls City, the residency requirement is three months preceding the election.
