WEST SALEM -- Jackie Pierce of West Salem has been tapped as the Democratic replacement nominee for House District 20.

Pierce was selected by her party on Aug. 21, and filed for candidacy with the Secretary of State on Aug. 22. District 20 covers Independence, Monmouth, West Salem and South Salem.

Pierce, 66, will square off on Nov. 6 against Rep. Vicki Berger, R-Salem, who is seeking her sixth consecutive two-year term.

Pierce worked as a psychiatric social worker for Oregon State Hospital for 19 years before retiring. She was also heavily involved in the leadership of the agency's chapter of Local 503 of Service Employees International Union.

She's been a Democratic precinct committee member for several years, and, for the last nine months, has been co-vice president of the Polk County Democrats.

Pierce ran for an Oregon Senate seat against Sen. Jackie Winters, R-Salem, in 2010 -- also as a replacement. Winters won with 68 percent of the vote. Pierce noted she only actively campaigned for three months.
