ACADEMIC HONORS
Dallas grads awarded scholarships
DALLAS -- The Dallas Volunteer Firefighters Association named two Dallas High School graduates as recipients of the Frank "Harpy" Bovard Scholarship during its meeting Aug. 31.
Landon Hattan and Anna Finke received the 2012 scholarships, named after Bovard, a volunteer firefighter in Dallas for 45 years. He left the department $35,000 in his will, which was used to create the scholarship.
"We owe a debt of gratitude to this fine gentleman, and this scholarship program is how his service is remembered and honored by the department and the community," said Eriks Gabliks, the association president. "No taxpayer dollars are used to fund this scholarship program, volunteer fundraising activities and interest on the Bovard trust fund allow the program to remain strong."
A scholarship selection committee interviewed each applicant and also reviewed their academic transcripts, participation in extracurricular activities, leadership and community service activities.
