SHERIDAN -- A three-acre brush fire south of Red Prairie Road on Highway 22W Friday night occupied nine agencies and stalled highway traffic in both directions.
Dallas Fire Chief Bill Hahn said the fire was called in as a small brush fire at about 5:20 p.m., but it quickly spread due to windy conditions. At one point it was within 100 yards of a home, but never got closer, he said.
The fire burned adjacent to the highway and the Polk County Sheriff's Office and Oregon Department of Transportation set up detours around it.
The fire burned grass, brush and some timber on three acres before being contained.
Fire departments from Dallas, Sheridan, Amity, McMinnville, Salem, Southwest Polk, Polk Fire No. 1, as well as the Oregon Department of Forestry and the U.S. Department of Forestry responded. In all, 25 pieces of equipment and a many as 65 firefighters battled the blaze.
