INDEPENDENCE -- Erica Gallegos, a Central High senior, is helping coordinate a personal hygiene products drive that will run through early December benefiting clients of Sable House in Dallas and the Polk County Commission for Women and Children.

The goal is to provide a large donation of personal hygiene and care items for the organizations to distribute among families in need. The kickoff for the drive was Monday; the drive will continue through Dec. 10.

Community members are asked to donate toothbrushes, dental floss, soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, bath towels, disposable razors, baby wipes and diapers.

Gallegos is working with the Monmouth-Independence Chamber of Commerce on the effort as part of her senior project. Some items will be distributed during the annual Polk County Community Connect event on Jan. 30.

Drop-off sites are located at public libraries in Monmouth and Independence, the Werner University Center at Western Oregon University, Roth's Fresh Market in Independence and MICC at 311 Monmouth St. in Independence.
