Local firm receives energy award

INDEPENDENCE -- Elkay Wood Products Co. in Independence was recently honored as one of Oregon's top industrial entities when it comes to energy efficiency.

Elkay, whose plant off Hoffman Road is known locally as Medallion Cabinetry, received second place for leadership in innovation as part of the "Oregon Leaders Award."

Elkay implemented technology and process changes in 2011 to reduce the amount of oven heat required to cure the finish on its cabinets and accessories.

The "Leaders" award is sponsored by the Oregon Department of Energy, the Energy Trust of Oregon, and other power and conservation organizations to highlight progress in energy efficiency.

Elkay altered the spraying technique used to finish its cabinets to a European method called the "nitrotherm spray system."

That, and other changes, resulted in a 72 percent reduction in energy consumption in the plant's finish ovens, and also cut material usage by 25 percent.
