DALLAS -- Dallas' two school choirs will help put the community in the Christmas spirit Thursday night at a holiday concert at Valley Life Center Church.

Afterward, the brother-and-sister team of choir directors Slade and Malena Thackeray are hoping people are in a giving mood.

Following the performance, the choir programs will host their first silent auction fundraiser.

"We have had some very generous supporters," Slade Thackeray said. "We feel really fortunate. Lots of people said `Yes, we want to support you.'"

Among those supporters are the Portland Opera and Portland Center Stage, a theater company. Closer to home, local artists Cindy and Don Hoskisson donated pottery and the Dallas Education Foundation offered glass ornaments.

Those items -- and many more -- will be part of the auction. But before the auction, the Dallas High School Chamber Choir and LaCreole Choir for Young People will entertain those in attendance.

The LaCreole choir will perform a set of traditional Christmas music while the Chamber Choir will perform jazz versions of fun Christmas songs. Darcie Chin, a Dallas High School 2002 graduate and student at Western Oregon University, will be featured in a solo performance.

"We feel that this is a great kickoff to the holiday season," Thackeray said. "However you choose to celebrate, people can come and enjoy the music and enjoy being together."

The program's goal for the auction is $1,000, which will help upgrade equipment, tune the choir piano and supplement the program's stipend.

Thackeray said one of his goals for this year is to incorporate more study of music history and theory to help the singers develop musically.

"Because we don't yet have the resources for me to teach multiple classes during the day, this is how we can build the program," Thackeray said.
