Donations being sought for Christmas 'care kits'

POLK COUNTY -- Want to assist the homeless this Christmas season?

The Polk County Sheriff's Office is collecting care kits to give to people living on the street and is asking for help putting them together.

Here's the idea: take a reusable grocery bag and fill it with items homeless people need, but can't always find.

New gloves, scarves, stocking caps, socks, underwear, rain ponchos and snacks are a few recommended items.

"It's pretty much anything people want to put in it, within reason," said Sgt. Dustin Newman, who is leading the effort. He added a few families have placed cards or personal notes in the bags, as well.

The objective is to keep the bags portable, so instead of coats and blankets, people should consider smaller items overlooked in other collections.

Complete bags can be dropped off at the Polk County Sheriff's Office, 850 Main St., Dallas, until Dec. 20. The bags will be handed out on Dec. 23 and Dec. 24.
