POLK COUNTY -- Looking for the perfect gift for your family and friends this holiday season? Here's an idea: Don't get them sick.
Polk County Public Health is offering flu vaccination shots Monday through Friday for everyone ages 6 months and older. The clinics run from 8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. at Polk County Public Health, 182 SW Academy St., Suite 302, in Dallas.
Cost of the vaccine is $20, but can be reduced based on your ability to pay. This year's vaccine protects against the H1N1 virus plus two new influenza strains. Shots will be available while supplies last. Immunizations take about two weeks to be fully effective.
Public Health also has the Tdap vaccine -- commonly called the "whooping cough shot" -- at no cost for uninsured adults ages 19-64.
Influenza symptoms usually include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle and body aches, headache and fatigue.
Polk County is also offering flu shots by appointment at the Polk County Mental Health clinic in West Salem, 1520 Plaza St. NW; and the Oregon Childhood Development Coalition, 535 G. St. in Independence. Appointments are necessary for those locations.
