'Financial Aid Night' is Wednesday
INDEPENDENCE -- Central High will hold a "Financial Aid Night" presentation Wednesday (today) at 6:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria.
Donna Kirk, director of financial aid at Western Oregon University, will be the guest speaker in English and will provide a speaker for a presentation in Spanish. Each will address all aspects of financial aid, with special emphasis on completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Central High School is located at 1530 Monmouth St. in Independence.

CHS group selling Christmas trees
INDEPENDENCE -- Central High School's Drug and Alcohol Free Senior Class Party Committee is selling Christmas trees as a fundraiser.
The Christmas tree lot is located in the Town and Country True Value parking lot, 1555 Monmouth St., Independence, across the street from Central High. A variety of trees and sizes, including Noble, Grand and Fraser firs, are available priced from $15 and up.
Lot hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends and 5:30 to 8 p.m. on weeknights.

Talmadge set to honor top students
INDEPENDENCE -- Top students at Talmadge Middle School will be recognized during a first trimester honor roll ceremony on Friday morning.
The event will recognize 40 students who managed to earn a 4.0 grade-point average during the last three months, and more than 90 who have maintained at least a 3.5 GPA.
The event will take place at the school from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. All family members are welcome. Refreshments will be served afterward.

Music competition taking entries
SALEM -- Music students in Polk County up to and including high school seniors are eligible to enter the Salem Chamber Orchestra's seventh annual Connie Fritz Memorial Concerto Competition.
The event is open to the following orchestral instruments: woodwinds, brass, strings, percussion, harp, piano, classical guitar, and voice.
The competition consists of two rounds. In the first round, judges will select a set of finalists. Finalists will be invited to perform in front of a live audience in the second round on Jan. 6 at 3 p.m. at Willamette University in Salem.
At the live competition, four prize winners will be named, including a grand prize winner.
Deadline to enter is Friday at 5 p.m.

Wreaths available from Central FFA
INDEPENDENCE -- Central High School's FFA students are selling hand-made wreaths as part of a club fundraiser.
The wreaths come in two sizes, 25 inches and 33 inches in diameter. There are also candy cane shaped wreaths and wreath centerpieces.
Prices run from $15 to $22 per wreath. Community members have until Monday to place their order.
Finished wreaths can be picked up in the front office of Central High. Proceeds help pay for club activities and go toward charitable causes in Monmouth and Independence.
