DALLAS -- A Polk County man will serve more than eight years in prison after pleading guilty to four felony sex crimes committed against a young relative.
Darryl Eugene Patten Jr., 41, pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree sex abuse and one count of attempted sodomy in Polk County Circuit Court Nov. 27.
He was arrested by Polk County deputies in July on 13 charges, including rape and sex abuse. The victim indicated to deputies the abuse had occurred during a two-year period.
Polk County District Attorney Stan Butterfield read a statement from the victim's mother during the sentencing hearing. She wrote that she was in disbelief that a family member could put her child through such "terror."
"It is my hope that his punishment fits his crime," she wrote.
The victim -- who was younger than 12 when the crimes occurred -- also submitted a written statement saying: "I wish he (Patten) would die in prison."
Patten's attorney, Chris Lillegard, indicated that Patten himself was a victim of sex abuse as a child and hoped to seek help for his condition.
"I just want to say I'm sorry," Patten said.
Polk County Circuit Judge William Horner sentenced Patten to eight years and four months in prison, the sentence agreed upon through a plea negotiation between the DA and the defendant. Patten will serve five years of post-prison supervision upon release from prison.
Horner also ordered Patten to undergo sex offender treatment and to have no contact with children under the age of 16.
