GRAND RONDE -- A Grand Ronde woman was struck and killed by a passing pickup while trying to cross Highway 18 on foot near Grand Ronde Monday afternoon.

Oregon State Police (OSP) Lt. Eric Davenport said at approximately 5 p.m. Monday Judi Gnade, 57, and a female companion were attempting to cross the highway near Fort Hill Restaurant when the victim was hit by an eastbound GMC pickup. Gnade lives across the highway from the restaurant.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The woman attempting to cross with Gnade was not injured in the incident. The pickup's driver, Jeffrey Kuust, 48, of Dallas also was uninjured and cooperated with investigators at the scene. No citations were issued.

OSP troopers from the McMinnville Area Command office are continuing the investigation.

Police said that stretch of the highway has no overhead street lighting and it was dark at the time of the accident.

Polk County Sheriff's Office, West Valley Fire District and Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
