Homework initiative needs donations
DALLAS -- Since 2010, nonprofit Polk Community Development Corporation (Polk CDC) has been offering the after-school homework program "Bringing Up Grades" (BUG). Now, it is looking for help to offer the program to more students.
BUG works with students in first through sixth grades on homework and provides a nutritious snack three days per week after school.
The program, offered by summer and after-school activity provider Outside the Box, is designed to help students succeed in school, said Diana Cvitanovich, the Polk CDC program coordinator.
At BUG, each student's homework records are kept with points given for regular attendance, completion of homework and good behavior.
"We have 43 students enrolled for next session and 25 attend on a regular basis now," Cvitanovich said. "It's really grown."
BUG would like to expand even more, but needs financial assistance to do so.
Cvitanovich said all donations are tax deductible.

Class seeking help mailing books
PERRYDALE -- Donations are needed to send reading books to elementary school students living in Tanzania.
Perrydale's middle school leadership class has collected almost 200 books that are to be mailed to the Kilimanjaro Primary School in Moshi, Tanzania, early in 2013. Funds are needed, however, to pay for postage. There are several boxes, each costing $60 to send abroad.
Those interested in contributing to the project can contact Linda Romey, Perrydale School District, at 503-623-4186.
Ash Creek hosting raffle for quilt
MONMOUTH -- Ash Creek Elementary School will begin selling tickets for its annual quilt raffle when winter term begins on Monday.
The quilt was made by Jane Swann, a third- and fourth-grade teacher at ACES. Tickets are $1 each and can be purchased at the front office of the school, 1360 N. 16th St., Monmouth.
The drawing will be held during a "Math and Science Night" event being planned for February. Proceeds from the raffle go toward school events and classroom supplies.
