SCHOOL NOTES

ACES will hold math, science night

MONMOUTH -- Families and students of Ash Creek Elementary School are welcome to join ACES' second annual Math and Science Night.

The event takes place Friday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and is free of charge.

Activities include 12 hands-on activities for students and families to explore and experiment with, including magnetic force fields, geometric shapes and pattern making.

ACES is located at 1360 N. 16th St., Monmouth.

Family movie nights on tap at KVCS

KINGS VALLEY -- Kings Valley Charter School is continuing its series of "family movie night" fundraisers for the school's foreign language tour in 2014.

The next movie, "The Odd Life of Timothy Green," is Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Admission is by a $2 suggested donation. Premium seating is $5. Baby-sitting is also available for $5 per child. A variety of food and drink concessions will be available for purchase.

Future family movie nights are scheduled March 16, April 20, May 18 and June 16.

Learn about WOU via online chat

MONMOUTH -- You can learn more about Western Oregon University and the admission process with Rob Findtner, director of admissions, during an online chat scheduled Feb. 13 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Findtner will be available by online chat to answer your questions via the CollegeWeekLive website (www.collegeweeklive.com). Participants are required to have a CollegeWeekLive account to participate in the chat.

The event is coordinated by WOU's Academic Programs & Support Center, Admissions Office.

ACADEMIC HONORS

Dallas trio makes SPU dean's list

SEATTLE -- Three students from Dallas are among those who have qualified for the Seattle Pacific University 2012 autumn quarter dean's list. Local honorees are Desiree Melodie Friesen, Lauren Elaine Isham and Anna Margaret Rebischke. Students on the dean's list have completed at least 12 credits and attained a 3.50 or higher grade-point average.

Local woman earns academic award

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Chauncey Baker of Dallas has earned honor roll status for the recently completed 2012 fall term at Washington and Lee University. Honor roll status at Washington and Lee represents a term grade-point average of at least 3.75 on a 4.0 scale. Baker is a 2011 graduate of Dallas High School.

Monmouth duo recognized at UP

PORTLAND -- Two Monmouth residents have made the dean's list at the University of Portland for the recently completed 2012 fall semester. They are Ellen Holton, a junior majoring in biology, and Victoria Wellock, a sophomore majoring in biology. Students need at least a 3.5 grade-point average to be eligible for the UP dean's list.

CHS grad honored at Luther College

DECORAH, Iowa -- Allison Bansen, a Luther College freshman from Monmouth, has been named to the school's 2012 fall semester dean's list. To be named to the dean's list, a student must earn a semester grade-point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale and must complete at least 12 credit hours with 10 hours of conventional grading. Bansen is a 2012 graduate of Central High School.
