DALLAS -- The annual celebration of those who put Dallas first -- Friday evening's 56th-annual Community Awards -- is taking place in the city's newest and most highly-touted addition this year.

The venue -- the Oregon Army National Guard's Col. James Nesmith Readiness Center -- seems perfect for the recognition of those making Dallas a better place.

Chelsea Pope, executive director of the Dallas Area Chamber of Commerce, the event host, said she's excited to bring the event to the Nesmith Readiness Center.

"It is allowing us to do several things differently, most importantly, having the room for more people to attend," she said. "We have loved hosting the Awards Ceremony at BeckenRidge Vineyards and Event Center for the past 10 years. But the last several years, we reached maximum capacity, and usually ended up with a waiting list. The new armory is allowing us to comfortably sit 200 for dinner and the presentation this year."

The chamber accepted nominations for the 10 award categories to be presented Friday: Business of the Year, First Citizen, Good Samaritan, Junior First Citizen, Most Improved Business, Small Business, Outstanding Organization, Ag Business, Excellence in Arts, and Exceptional Family.

Dinner is catered by Capricorn Catering and North Dallas Catering will provide bar service featuring Johan Vineyards wine and beer on tap.
