DALLAS -- The former Safeway building in downtown Dallas will be up for auction May 15.
The 13,826-square-foot building located at 820 SW Church St. was last used as a storage facility for now-closed TTM Technologies. It is currently owned by Umpqua Bank.
Dallas City Planner John Swanson said there has been plenty of interest in the building and location in the past, but nothing ever came to fruition. He said a business group that owned the building before Umpqua Bank had a plan for the location, but disbanded before getting started.
"It really is a prime location in the downtown," Swanson said. "Our goal is to get a functioning member of the business community into the building. We want to see something good happening there."
The first of two property inspections will happen Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. A second walk-through is scheduled May 6 from 1 to 3 p.m.
Sharon Peede, the vice president of the auction firm handling the sale, Realty Marketing/Northwest, said Umpqua Bank had success in the past selling properties in similar auctions. However, Umpqua Bank tried to auction the property for $225,000 in November with no takers. The minimum price Umpqua Bank will accept is $175,000 in a cash-only transaction, meaning the sale will not be financed.
Peede said the firm began advertising the auction April 1 and has seen plenty of early interest. The auction includes 118 properties located throughout the Northwest.
"We've had tremendous attention to this particular auction, the most since 2007," Peede said.
Sealed bids on the property are due May 15.
The building was constructed in 1963 and served nearly two decades as a Safeway store until the new location on West Ellendale opened in 1981.
Swanson said with the building being vacant so long, it's in danger of "falling off people's radar." For that reason, he said the city would like to see a viable, job-creating business take possession of the property.
"We will provide whatever we can to assist ... once the building is sold," Swanson said.
