INDEPENDENCE -- Independence residents will see a 5 percent increase to water and sewer rates in their July bill.
The city council voted July 9 to implement a deferred increase in rates from a December 2012 meeting. In that meeting the council approved to split a scheduled 10 percent increase between January and this summer.
The 5 percent increase means the water usage rate per 100 cubic feet will increase from $2.72 to $2.86 for residential, commercial and industrial customers.
Sewer utility fees will increase from the $38.94 base monthly rate to $40.89 for residential customers.
Commercial customers will see the same increase to their base monthly fee but the charge for water usage over one Equivalent Residential Unit (ERU), 800 cubic feet of water, will go from $1.73 to $1.82.
All customers will also see an increase in their stormwater utility rates. The regularly scheduled increase was meant for April 1 but postponed to July 1.
The monthly base rate will increase from $1.22 to $1.26 and the monthly per ERU charge will increase from $6.86 to $7.41.
