School supplies to be distributed
FALLS CITY -- Free school supplies will be handed out to Falls City School District students of all grades Thursday in Falls City's Upper Park, 333 Seventh St.
The donations will be provided through a partnership between the Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Center and Falls City Mayor Amy Houghtaling. The goal is to provide supplies to 155 children.
The Salvation Army will distribute backpacks filled with basic school supplies at the park from 4 to 7 p.m. The afternoon will include music, activities and food, with hot dogs, chips and drinks provided.
Families who need help with school supplies need to present a photo ID and/or current utility bill showing their Falls City address.

Help needed for KVCS cleanup day
KINGS VALLEY -- Kings Valley Charter School will hold its annual back-to-school maintenance and cleanup day Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Volunteers are needed to help with playground rock spreading, gym cleanup, weed eating and brush cutting, lawn mowing, weeding, pressure washing and safety repair issues. Of special note is that the school seeks four volunteers who can bring weed eaters or brush cutters to the work party, and two volunteers who can bring riding lawn mowers.
A barbecue with food provided will be available.
KVCS is located at 38840 Kings Valley Highway, between Dallas and Philomath.

Young Artists Playtrium classes set
DALLAS -- Young Artists Playtrium (YAP) will be offering 12-week music education sessions this fall at Lyle, Oakdale Heights and Whitworth elementary schools, as well as LaCreole Middle School.
Classes begin Sept. 16 and meet twice per week for one hour. Cost for the 12-week session is $50.
Elementary students will learn to play instruments and sing. Middle school students will focus on choral music.
Classes will meet at the following times: Lyle -- Monday and Wednesday, 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.; Oakdale Heights -- Tuesday and Thursday, 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.; Whitworth -- Monday and Wednesday, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.; and LaCreole -- Tuesday and Thursday, 7:30 to 8:20 a.m.
Registration is due by Sept. 9 and space is limited to 30 students at each school. Registration is available online at www.yaplaytrium.org. Paper forms can be turned in to the student's school.

Eola Hills has classroom openings
RICKREALL -- Eola Hills Charter School, formerly Ballston Community School, has a limited number of openings still available for the 2013-14 school year.
Enrollment openings are available in grades 1-4, with a very limited number of openings remaining for grades 5-12.
The school is located at 7575 Bethel Road in Rickreall. Its charter is through the Amity School District.

MVCA administrator returns to post
MONMOUTH -- Former Mid-Valley Christian Academy (MVCA) administrator Gaye Stewart has been named to the post for a second time.
Kathy Cook, MVCA board chairwoman, announced last week that Stewart, who served in the position from 2009 to 2011, will return for the 2013-14 school year at the Monmouth school. Stewart has 30 years experience as a teacher and administrator in the Salem-Keizer School District. She has been on the MVCA board for eight years and is the current superintendent. She will replace Leonard Hackett, who has accepted an administrative position at Evergreen Christian School in Olympia, Wash.
