River crossing update scheduled
INDEPENDENCE -- Polk County Commissioner Craig Pope will host a community meeting updating the status of the Salem River Crossing proposal and its affect on Polk County Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Independence Public Library, 175 Monmouth St.
Pope represents Polk County on the Salem River Crossing Oversight Team.
In June, the city of Salem voted to reject the project's preferred alternative and put forward its own scaled-back version of the crossing. Pope said the oversight team is now reviewing the option, called the "Salem Alternative."
Pope's update on the status of the project will be followed by an audience question-and-answer session.
Thursday's community meeting is sponsored by The Friends of Polk County.

Culvert work to close Bursell Road
MONMOUTH -- Bursell Road north of Monmouth will be closed to all traffic beginning Monday and continuing through Sept. 26 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The closure is due to culvert replacement work taking place on Bursell Road, 1,000 feet west of Riddell Road.
Polk County road crews will attempt to open the road each night and readerboards will be placed prior to the work starting. Drivers should plan to use alternative routes past this project if available.
