Covering Dallas, Monmouth, Independence, Falls City and surrounding areas since 1868
October 15, 2013
DALLAS -- Have an idea for how the Polk County Fairgrounds & Event Center should use its recently purchased 16 acres of new land? Is there an event or show you would like to see come to the fairgrounds?
The Polk County Fair Board wants to hear about it, and it has switched the time for its monthly meeting Thursday to give more people a chance to attend and share those thoughts.
Typically, the board meets in the daytime, which is inconvenient for many people.
"There are a lot of people who would like to come to fair board meetings, but they can't because they are at work," Fair Manager Tina Andersen said. "We don't want to move forward without public opinion."
The fair board has scheduled a work session to follow its regular business meeting to discuss the possible uses for the fairgrounds.
"It will be an open discussion with the public on what they would like to see," Andersen said.
The work session is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
Andersen added that the board isn't just concentrating on the annual fair, but the events that take place throughout the year.
"We took comments during (the 2013) fair, but most of the comments were fair-related," she said. "We want people to look at the fairgrounds as a whole, not just those four days."
She said the additional property will add more space and parking, making it possible to bring in larger events year-round.
In order to make decisions, however, the board wants to know what activities Polk County residents would be interested in attending. Comments from the meeting will be used to compile a survey, which will further refine the board's options.
"People donated money to buy the land, so we want to know what their input is," Andersen said.
