SALEM — A Dallas man has been charged with attempted aggravated murder in a Dec. 6 incident near Silverton in which a Marion County Deputy was shot.

The suspect, 25-year-old Cody M. Edwards, is facing eight other charges: first-degree assault, three counts of felon in possession of a firearm, attempting to elude police, altering a weapon, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and possession of methamphetamine.

The shooting took place the morning of Dec. 6, when Silverton Police requested help in the search for a stolen vehicle, which police say was driven by Edwards.

According to police, Edwards left the car in a field near 117th and Sunnyview Road Northeast and tried to flee. Deputy Jim Buchholz later spotted the suspect near a Christmas tree farm.

Gunshots were exchanged as Buchholz attempted to arrest Edwards and the deputy was shot. Other officers arrived and, after more gunfire, were able to arrest Edwards, who was also wounded.

Edwards appeared in Marion County Circuit Court on Thursday. After being treated for wounds suffered in the incident, Edwards was taken to Marion County Jail, where he is being held without bail. His next appearance is scheduled for Friday.

Buchholz was released from the hospital Dec. 8 and is recovering.
