WOU winter preview day is Saturday
MONMOUTH — Western Oregon University will host the first of two free winter preview days for prospective students Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Werner University Center.
Prospective students and their guests will meet WOU students, faculty and staff by participating in a variety of activities. High school seniors and transfer students can apply for fall term 2014 admission at check-in and receive notification of their status at the end of the program.
While the event is free, online registration is recommended. Deadline to sign up is Wednesday (today) at 5 p.m.
A second winter preview day is scheduled Feb. 22.

MVCA offering two new programs
MONMOUTH — Mid-Valley Christian Academy has announced the introduction of two new programs to begin this week with the new semester.
A new pre-3-year-old class started Tuesday. Classes will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:15 to 11:15 a.m. Storytime, social skill development and preparation for pre-4 will be core elements. The class will be taught by Erin Bañuelos, the pre-kindergarten teacher.
A children's theater will begin as an after-school activity for ages 9-14 on Wednesday (today). Classes will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Home-school families are welcome to participate. The theater will be directed by Shannon Banke, middle school teacher at MVCA. Participation fee is $75 for new students; fee is covered by tuition of current MVCA students.

Registration open for YAP classes
DALLAS — Young Artists Playtrium still is registering elementary and middle school students in Dallas for its spring after- or before-school music classes. The next session begins Feb. 3 and runs through April. Cost is $50.
There are two sections available at Lyle Elementary School: Monday and Wednesday from 2:15 to 3:05 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 2:15 to 3:05 p.m.
Whitworth Elementary School has a Tuesday and Thursday session from 2:15 to 3:20 p.m., and LaCreole Middle School will host a Tuesday and Thursday session from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m.

Winner of contest to get class party
MONMOUTH — Students at Monmouth Elementary School will continue to collect box tops, old cellphones and ink cartridges through Feb. 3. Items may be delivered to the front office or brought in by a child to his or her classroom.
The annual recycle contest is a fundraiser for the Parent-Teacher Association. Two classrooms, one in kindergarten through second grade, and one in grades 3-5, will win a Valentine's Day class party for collecting the most recyclables and box tops.

IES wants unwanted shoes, clothes
INDEPENDENCE — Students at Independence Elementary School are conducting a shoe and clothing drive through Tuesday.
Unwanted items may be placed in the green bag being sent home with students, or delivered to the front office of the school, 150 S. Fourth St., Independence. The program is in partnership with Go Green Charity Recyclers, www.ggrc.net.
