DALLAS — Lt. Andrew Woolsey was named Firefighter of the Year at Dallas Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service's annual awards ceremony Jan. 18 at Oregon National Guard's Polk County Readiness Center in Dallas.
Woolsey was one of seven honored with awards that evening.
Retirees and volunteers also were honored. Fire Chief Fred Hertel started a new tradition this year by presenting memorial American Flags in a display case to each retiree.
Awards went to: Austin Champ, Training Officers Award; Nicole Schmidt, Rookie of the Year; Capt. Ken Waller, Fire Officer of the Year; Chaplain Ken Braun, Excellence in Service Award; Dave Christensen, EMT of the Year; and Dallas Trophy, Community Service Award.
Retirees recognized were: Chief Bill Hahn, 43 years; Assistant Chief Joshua Darland, 24 years; Capt. Tom Moore, 15 years; and Capt. Kevin Williams, 12 years.
Service recognition was presented to the following:?5 Years of Service (Fire) — Chaplain Wally Wildman and Support Member Leroy Rogers; 5 Years of Service (EMS) — Ryan Saltalamachia, Amy Hailey and Paul McCallum; 10 Years of Service (EMS) — Dave Christensen; 15 Years of Service (Fire) — Capt. Tom Moore; 20 Years of Service (Fire) — Capt. Shaun Wagner; and 25 Years of Service (Fire) — Capt. Joanna Hibbler.
Twenty-five of the 65 volunteer members received special recognition for exceeding the department's standards by attending more than 125 hours of training in the past year.
In 2013, volunteers responded to more than 650 emergency incidents, participated in more than 7,000 hours of training, and gave more than 4,500 hours of community service at various events.
