LaVerne Allen Perry

LaVerne Allen Perry

LaVerne "Verne" Allen Perry, 84, of Dallas died Friday after a long battle with Alzheimers.

He was born in Clatskanie to Roy Allen Perry and Goldie Juanita Lewis Perry at the Kerry Buster Creek Logging Camp where his father worked.

In the early 1930s his family moved to Toledo. Here he attended school through the eighth grade and developed his skill and love for basketball. In 1944 he moved to Dallas, graduating from Dallas High School in 1948.

Verne married his high school sweetheart Janet Barnhart in 1950. They resided in Dallas for their 62 years of marriage.

Verne was able to spend his working life in the outdoors, which he loved. While in junior high in Toledo he planted trees for C.D. Johnson Lumber Co. Years later as a contract logger he would log those trees he had planted. After high school he worked for Pope and Talbot Lumber Co. of Dallas before he became a partner in a small sawmill and logging operation near Burnt Woods. After the sawmill burned he worked as a logging superintendent for Shipler Logging Co. and later for LaRo Lumber.

In 1977 Verne purchased Winona Logging Co. and with his partner formed the sister corporation of Gem Logging Inc. He retired from contract logging in 1989.

Verne loved helping people and running big equipment. In 1994 he agreed to help develop the Dalton Rock Quarry and spent many happy hours with his D-8 Cat building roads and moving mountains of dirt. In 1997, as a result of his work at Dalton Rock, he received the Reclamationist of the Year award from the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industry.

Verne co-owned a wood yard located on Highway 22 and had great fun with his partner cutting and selling fire wood. Verne and his wife, Jan, along with their son, Dale, also owned and operated Farrol's Restaurant in Rickreall for 19 years.

Verne enjoyed being helpful wherever possible, including many hours spent working at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Dallas. Verne was skilled at woodworking and along with other dedicated church members worked to rebuild St. Thomas' Dawson Hall after a fire.

After retiring Verne and Jan enjoyed trips to Hawaii and traveling throughout the United States. Verne's hobbies included woodworking, water skiing (in his younger years), enjoying his family and using his skills and talents to help others. Verne treasured his grandchildren and played with them often, teasing them unmercifully and teaching them many things.
