POLK COUNTY -- The front page of the May 22, 2013 edition of the Polk County Itemizer-Observer features the Dallas district-title winning trio of Mary Kate McGuire, Oskar Lindberg and Kyleen Benz.
INDEPENDENCE -- It hasn't been determined who actually came up with the idea. Either way, the Central baseball team is sporting a new look these days to go along with a boatload of newfound confidence.
INDEPENDENCE -- For eight innings, the Central softball team didn't commit an error. But in one inning -- the fourth -- the Panthers kicked, threw and bobbled their way to six mistakes in Thursday's Class 4A play-in game with Mazama.
DALLAS -- It's playoff time in Dallas. After a stellar regular season that saw the Dragons baseball team finish 19-7 and earn a play-in round bye, Dallas is set to host Wilsonville in a 4:30 p.m. matchup Wednesday in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs.
Perrydale will travel to North Douglas for 2A-1A first round game.
TURNER -- Her first jump must have felt like a bad dream. "I didn't even listen to what they said," Central freshman Reba Hoffman admitted, referring to her initial leap of just over 12 feet in the long jump event at Friday's Oregon West Conference Track and Field Championships at Cascade High.

MONMOUTH -- This will be the fourth and final time Amanda Schumaker will see how far she can throw the javelin -- and if it's good enough for a national title -- when Saturday's competition kicks off at the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships in Pueblo, Colo.

MONMOUTH -- Western Oregon senior shortstop Blake Miller was named the 2013 Daktronics, Inc. NCAA Division II West Region Player of the Year after ranking near the top of every batting category in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
PERRYDALE -- The Perrydale boys basketball team will hold three separate camps for boys and girls in grades 3-9 (for the 2013-14 school year), with the first session set for May 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Perrydale High School's gymnasium.
INDEPENDENCE -- The Independence Elks Lodge donated as many as 200 soccer balls and a goal to local soccer club Academy FC in a special ceremony Monday.
MONMOUTH -- Western Oregon women's soccer midfielder JoEllen DeLeon has been selected to compete on the Philippine Senior Women's National Team for its women's Asian Cup group stage contests in Dhaka, Bangladesh, beginning Tuesday and running until Saturday.
MONMOUTH -- The 27th annual Western Oregon University Wolves Athletic Auction is set for June 1 and the school is seeking donations to put up for bid.
