Vessell, a junior for the Dallas swim team, shaved an astounding 2 seconds off her best time in the 100-yard breaststroke at last weekend's Class 5A State Swimming Championships. She was the lone Dragon to reach Saturday's finals, where she finished fifth, edging out two Mid-Willamette Conference swimmers that had defeated her at the district meet just a week prior. It was the first state appearance for Vessell, who chose not to attend last season after qualifying due to a schedule conflict with her club volleyball team.

Lawrence, a junior for the Dallas wrestling team, came out of nowhere in Saturday's Mid-Willamette Conference District Championships to roll through the 138-pound weight class undefeated with a 4-0 record and take the title with a 2-1 overtime decision over Silverton's Clancy Brady in the championship match. Lawrence, who has primarily wrestled junior varsity matches for most of the season, entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed.
